summer 2024
FIRST LOOK
A NOTE FROM OUR PUBLISHING EDITOR, JACINTA V. WHITE
There is no surprise that, at Snapdragon Journal, we believe art in general and creative writing in particular play a vital role in wellness, both for individuals and our global community. With wars and conflicts, senseless violence, and harm, it’s easy to feel hopeless. What can we do when the adversary seems so big? What voice do we have to make a true difference? Who will even listen? I know I’m not alone in asking these questions, and for that, I am thankful.
When our editors and I brainstormed submission themes for the year, Climate Change emerged naturally. It felt as if each of us had been contemplating the world, the environment, the climate, and the changes we're experiencing within it. What do we need to say to the earth and to each other? What can poetry and creative nonfiction reveal about our global experiences? How can hope and rage coexist if not on the page?
As the Snapdragon Journal team continues to expand our community of poets, writers, artists, healers, prophets, philosophers, audience, and advocates, we hope that each word we publish helps shift the world for the better.
May you come here and keep coming back to be inspired, renewed, and challenged. May our collective energy, advocacy, and art save the world, or at the very least, document and remind us what it means to be a part of it.
We will add new voices from selected work throughout the summer. Be sure to come back!
